It is essential to see a psychotherapist if you have continuing care or aftercare as part of your overall treatment program. If not, call your treatment facility and ask for a referral. Journaling can be structured with goals to address the stressors of the day or difficult feelings that were experienced. But journaling can also be free flowing with focus on gratitude for life’s gifts and even prayer.

These strategies don’t have to be difficult, but they are easy to let slip when life gets stressful and busy. The holidays are often wrought with a mix of emotions under the best of circumstance.

Our habits can feel defining at times, but they can evolve and adapt to align with what makes you, you. When we match our habits and practices to our character, we can achieve more harmony and a stronger sense of self. Changing your behaviors to match your character, and becoming the best version of you.

Ways to Avoid Relapse During the Holiday Season

Simple things, like parking down the street so that your car doesn’t get blocked into a driveway, can be a massive help in these times. Just because this year is tough doesn’t mean every year is going to be tough. Moreover, as public awareness about the disease of addiction increases, the less stigmatized it will be and the more openly our society will celebrate recovery. Headaches, sluggishness or low energy, lack of mental clarity, and sugar cravings can all come from being dehydrated. Your cup of herbal tea, non-caffeinated drinks, or the fruits and vegetables you eat can all count towards your water content too. For those just out of rehab, especially those who don’t have much experience with meditation, a teacher is important.
